Analysing Cook book front cover/ layout

Cook book layout analysis:

This layout is one of my favorites that I have seen, I love how sleek it looks!! This is how I would like mine to my laid out. Very minmial but effective. I also would like to have my layout as one side is the recipe and the other side is the photo of the meal because you can see what your cooking and how it should look. Using personal experience I am more likely going to cook a recipe where I can see a picture compared to some recipes where they only have the instructions. The photos have a very cool tone as well which actually inspires me because I feel the more cool tone effect on food photography the better the quality which means you can see the food in greater detail. I would like to incorporate icons like in this layout to my cook book using Illustrator to create them. I feel like this will be visually more applicable for the audience.

This layout is very different to what I’ve seen recently, I love how they have incorporated the photography of the meals into the background with writing over it framing the food nicely on the page. On the other hand it does make the photo stand out less due to the writing on the page so I will have to think further into this if I feel like incorporating this into my book. I like the diagrams of how to do some of the steps as I feel like people can somtimes benefit from this.

Cook book front cover analysis:

This front cover is very effective. This is how I would like to have my photography of the meals to look like, to show great detail and incite the viewer into wanting to cook the recipe. I love the typography they used for the title as well, it looks really different but matches the front cover and looks very effective in style and colour. This has inspired me  to really work on the front cover trying to make the title as different as I can.

Final major project Blog

9/03/20 Day 1 : Today I started generating ideas for my final major project. I thought generating ideas through a mind map would be visually better as well as clear to read. After I finished and came up with everything I could think of I knew what I wanted to do, which was to create a cook book.

10/03/20 Day 2: I started evaluating my ideas futher to make sure the cook book was the right decision. I did this  by going on pintrest generating ideas on what I would like it to look like. I have created a pintrest moodboard as well.

11/03/20 Day 3: Today I started my proposal as I know what I am definitely doing for my final major project.

12/03/20 Day 4: Day Off

13/03/20 Day 5 : Today I continued to futher write my proposal.

14/03/20  Day 6: Weekend

15/03/20 Day 7: Weekend

16/03/20 Day 8: Today I continued to futher write my proposal starting on my action plan which will be dificult for me because I will be doing a book therefore the pre production will be very different.

17/03/20 Day 9: Today I decided to make my action plan more visually appealing to look at by adding my own fonts and colour to it.

18/03/20 Day 10: I finished off my proposal today by creating a schedule that I hope to follow for my final major project there are some things I will need to finalise such as my action plan once it has been looked at then it will be complete.

19/03/20 Day 11: Day off

20/03/20 Day 12: Today I am starting to do primary research by researching what I would like to incorporate into my cook book such as recipies. I have also researched the cost of things as well because I would like to add a chart next to each recipe to let the reader know how much roughly it will cost. By doing this I can then move on to the next stage which is deciding my target audience.

21/03/20 Day 13: weekend

22/03/20 Day 14: weekend

23/03/20 Day 15: Today I started the process of starting my questionnaire but its not quite finished hoping to finish it tomorrow but in the mean time I have received feedback on my proposal that I will need to apply to it.

24/03/20 Day 16: Today for my final major project I have started to analyse a layout of a cook book I really like the look of and Im inspired by. I hope to finish this all off tomrrow by finishing the layout I did  today and adding an analysis of a front cover of a cook book as well.

Target audience music video

My target audience for my music video is prodominately male and female who like rock music as the song is classed as rock. The song is not explicit therefore it can be open for the age range of 16- 40 as they are going to be more of the age range to listen to this type of music. My music video target audience will have no specific genders to watch it as well as sexuality and ethnicity. The music video is  based for people who enjoy rock music/ performance music video.

Explorer will lean toward my music video more due to them wanting, energy – autonomy, experience, challenge, new frontiers. Brand choice highlights difference, sensation, adventure, indulgence and instant effect (Younger – student).

Questionnaire

https://forms.gle/imCwDsYH3vvsLNWF9

I compiled a short questionnaire to see what the public think I should do in my music video. In the questionnaire I started off with a link to the original song so they could get an over view of the lyrics and overall style. I also asked a series of questions linked with a photograph to get the publics opinions on my own ideas.

Screenshot 2020-02-03 at 14.19.15

This is a very basic question but it gives me an overview to see what sort of age range was answering the questions. 46.7% of the people that answered the questions were male and 53.3% were female.

Screenshot 2020-02-03 at 14.19.21

Again I asked a very basic question but I would like to know what age is answering the questions, 40% of the people answering my questions are below 19, 33.3% are 20-29….

Screenshot 2020-02-03 at 14.19.24

53.3% of the public said they tend to watch music videos on the music video channels on the TV and 46.7% of the public said they watch them on YouTube. I will have no access to get it  aired on the music video channels on the TV so YouTube will be where I will showcase the music video.

Screenshot 2020-02-03 at 14.19.26

46.7% of the people that took part in this questionnaire said they prefer colour in music videos where as 33.3% said they like a variety of colour and black and white.  20% of people said they like black and white music videos. Due to the results I think I am going to make my music video in all colour. I will play around with colours and lighting in my music video because I feel like its a great effect to have.

Screenshot 2020-02-03 at 14.19.29

For this question I added a photo which you can see if you click the link at the top. It was to get a feel of what people think of coloured lighting which was very positive with 12 people rated 4-5 on the photo which is good. I will definitely be experimenting with coloured lighting.

Screenshot 2020-02-03 at 14.19.35

I added an image to this question as I wanted to find out people opinions on an image I took to see if they feel I should add it to the music video, or something similar. 40% of the people that did the questionnaire voted the photo a 5 and another 40% voted it 4 leaving 20% of the people voting as a 3 so I feel like I will try and incorporate it into the music video if it looks good with the rest of the music video.

Screenshot 2020-02-03 at 14.19.37

I added an image to this question as I wanted to find out people opinions to see if they feel I should recreate something like the image I took to see if they feel I should recreate something like the image 86.7% said they liked it. 13.3% said they didnt like the photo. I feel like I will incorporate this image into the music video as I feel like its very effective.

Screenshot 2020-03-30 at 12.16.43.png

I added an image to this question as I wanted to find out people opinions on it and to see if they prefer this style to the image above, but the public prefered the image above more as 66.7% of people said they like it and 33.3% people said they didn’t. Therefore I will be using the other image.

Screenshot 2020-02-03 at 14.19.42

I added a picture I took as an experiment to see if the public liked the effect I was trying to achieve . 100% of the people who took part said they really like the effect. As it was such a positive response I will deifinetly be adding something like this to the music video.

Screenshot 2020-02-03 at 14.19.48

I also filmed a short video to try out an effect that I wanted to include. I wanted to see if the public liked the effect I was trying to achieve . 100% of the people who took part said they really like the effect. Due to this response I will definetly be adding something like this to the music video.

French New Wave

The French New Wave was a film movement from the 1950s and 60s and one of the most influential in cinema history. Also known as “Nouvelle Vague,” it gave birth to a new kind of cinema that was highly self-aware and revolutionary to mainstream filmmaking. During WWII, films from outside France stopped being imported into the country. But after the war, those restrictions were lifted everywheren was inundated by a flood of “new” movies. All this work from Hollywood legends such as Welles, Hitchcock, and Ford  made the French critics go crazy and the rest is history.

Key points in French New Wave:

  • Deemphasized plot & dialogue was often made up on the spot
  • Jump cuts rather than continuity editing
  • Location shooting
  • Handheld cameras
  • Long takes
  • Direct sound & available light (live recordings, often didn’t adjust light)

What Were The key New Wave Films?

Vivre sa vie (1962)

Hiroshima mon amour (1959)

Hiroshima mon amour (1959)

Breathless (1960)

Les Bonnes femmes (1960)

Les Bonnes femmes (1960)

  • A Bout de Souffle (Godard, 1959)
  • Le Quatres Cent Coups (Truffaut, 1959)
  • Cleo from 5 to 7 (Varda, 1962)
  • Hirosima Mon Amour (Renais, 1959)

How did existentialism influence the new wave?

Associated with Jean-Paul Sartre, existentialism stressed the individual, free choice, the absence of any rational understanding of the universe and a sense of the absurdity in human life. An existentialist seeks to act authentically instead of playing pre-ordained roles dictated by society. Characters in French New Wave films are often marginalized, young anti-heroes and loners, with no family ties, who behave spontaneously, often act immorally and are frequently seen as anti-authoritarian. In A Bout de Souffle (1959) the protagonist kills and shows no remorse In Varda’s Cléo de 5 á 7 (1961) the protagonist stops playing the roles others expect of her, when she discovers she has cancer, and starts to live authentically.

How did location filming affect the look of films?

Available light was preferred to studio-style lighting and using sounds that were available at the time was the preferred way rather than extensive studio dubbing. The camera was often on the move instard of being still, with a great deal of fluid panning and tracking. Often only one camera was used, in lots of origninal ways; following characters down streets, into cafes and bars, or looking over their shoulders to watch life go by. “Camera Stylo”

How were actors used differently?

In A Bout de Souffle this leads to lengthy scenes of basic dialogue, in opposition to the staged speeches of much traditional film acting. Monologues were also used, for example in Godard’s Charlotte and her Bloke (1959); as were voice-overs expressing a character’s inner feelings, as in Rohmer’s La Boulangère Du Monceau. The actors in these films were not big stars prior to the French New Wave, but a group of stars soon became associated with the films including Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jean-Pierre Léaud, Jeanne Moreau and Anna Karina. Women were often given strong parts, that did not conform to the typical roles often seen in most Hollywood cinema, for example, Jeanne Moreau in Truffaut’s Jules et Jim (1962) and Corinne Marchand in Varda’s Cléo de 5 á 7.

Soviet Montage

What was the Historical Context?

During the Russian Revolution in 1917,  The Bolsheviks overthrew the Tsar to establish Communism. They needed to get their message accross to the masses in order to communicate their ideals and inflict their power on the people. They needed to film a new medium that could do this effectively. These films could then:

    • Use Propaganda to explain the ideas of the Communist party
    • Agitate the population to join and support the party
    • Agitation + Propaganda = Agitprop

How did the soviet film theory develop?

The theory was developed durimg the founding of the worlds first film school in Moscow. The main aim was to train film makers to produce Agitprop films. Lev Kuleshov led workshops sessions where D.W. Griffith’s film “Intolerance” was studied in detail. Lack of available film stock led them to re-edit the film as an experiment, rather than shooting their own material. He became interested in montage (editing) as a way of creating meaning.

What is the Kuleshov effect?

Having experimented with Intolerance, Kuleshov realized that reordering shots could change their meaning. He conducted an experiment, inter cutting shots of an actor with shots of:

    • A hot bowl of soup
    • A child in a coffin
    • An attractive woman

Viewers interpreted the actor’s expression as hungry, grief-stricken and aroused, even though it was the same shot each time.

How was the montage used to create agitprop?

Montage was a useful way to communicate meaning:

    • Cinema was silent so films needed to communicate without dialogue.
    • Intertitles were also no good as the population were mostly illiterate.

Another film maker, Sergei Eisenstein, used the principles of montage to create films that would persuade viewers to support the Bolsheviks. His film “Battleship Potemkin” contains a famous sequence in which Tsarist soldiers massacre a crowd of unarmed civilians

What are Eisensteins 5 types of montage?

1. Metric Montage

Cutting according to a regular, specific number of frames, no matter what is happening in the shot.

2. Rhythmic Montage

Cutting according to the content of the shots. Creates smooth visual continuity between shots.

3. Tonal Montage

Cutting according to emotional tone of the shots. Shots of a sleeping baby suggest a calm tone, requiring less frequent cuts.

4. Overtonal Montage

Taking into account the use of the previous three kinds of cutting when assembling longer sequences.

5. Intellectual Montage

Intercutting images unrelated in continuity to suggest ideas and/or concepts.

What is creative geography?

Montage could be used to create imaginary spaces that could not exist in real life. In this scene from Just a Gigolo, David Bowie and Marlene Dietrich shot their parts a month apart in different rooms but editing is used to try to create the illusion that they are interacting in the same space.

Surrealism

What are the key surrealist films?

The first Surrealist film is widely considered to be The Seashell and the Clergyman from 1928, directed by Germaine Dulac. Another film is Luis Buñuel’s Un Chien Andalou, made in collaboration with Salvador Dalí, in 1929. Dalí collaborated with Buñuel again on L’Age D’Or in 1930, Dalí was later hired by Alfred Hitchcock to create a Surrealist dream sequence in Spellbound (1945). Some consider Luis Bunuel to be the only genuiely surrealist film maker.

What led to the development of surrealism?

Surrealism officially began with Dadaist writer André Breton’s 1924 Surrealist manifesto. Influences included:

    • The strength of Communism/Marxism as a political force. The Russian Revolution had occurred in the previous decade.
    • Sigmund Freud’s ideas about the subconscious, including dream analysis, were also recent and fashionable
    • The seemingly meaningless slaughter of the First World War which made many artists question what the point of art was in a world where such acts were possible.

All these factors were an influence on the growth of surrealism.

What are Freud’s key ideas?

The 3 main ideas are the three levels of consciousness

  1. The conscious deals with awareness of present perceptions, feelings, thoughts, memories, fantasies at any particular moment;
  2. The pre-conscious is related to data that can readily be brought to consciousness;
  3. The unconscious refers to data retained but not easily available to the individual’s conscious awareness or scrutiny.

The unconscious

  1.  A repository for traumatic repressed memories;
  2. The source of anxiety-provoking drives, which are socially or ethically unacceptable to the individual.

What are the Characteristics of Surrealism?

The belief that reality is not orderly and logical but is, in fact, a collection of coincidences and chance occurrences. The only way to properly express this true reality is by allowing the unconscious mind free expression, rather than being stifled by the rational conscious mind. Surrealist art must not be planned but must grow and develop unconsciously.

German expressionism

German expressionism is part of a modernist movement which started orginally with painting and poetry. It was where people felt they needed to express theor ideas and thoughts about the First World War.
In films it showed the reality of every day life, it showed the truth and people had to deal with it, it showed emotion and suffering of a broken nation and the people who were part of that nation.

The main characteristics of German Expressionism are:

A mise en scene feel to create a dark and heavy atmosphere

Long shadow effects

Artificial sets with realistic details

The details in the set will stir up the audiences imagination and interest

Camera is often set at unusual angles which will give the audience a different perception

Can create mystery or emotional stress

Slower pace than other movies
